We are currently seeking a Associate Scientist to join Bristol Myers Squibb Biologics Development group in Summit, New Jersey. This position in Biologics Process Development is to support the development of high-efficiency upstream processes for recombinant protein production. The successful candidate will perform mammalian cell culture experiments as well as evaluate other innovative technologies at various scales. The Associate Scientist in Global Upstream Bio-Process Development will be working in a dynamic team setting across cell line, upstream/downstream process development, and analytical groups to develop highly efficient and robust upstream processes to support BMS’s biologics pipeline. The candidate will also contribute to continued platform improvement and technology development efforts to further the upstream development workflow.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Performing pilot scale runs with single-used bioreactor for material generation, scale-up test, and tox batches
- Conducting small-scale shake flask and bioreactor experiments for cell culture process optimization, which requires some flexible schedule/weekend work.
- Operating ambr15, ambr250, and 5L bench top bioreactors.
- Investigating and manipulating cellular metabolism for process understanding and improvement
- Evaluating process robustness and mitigation strategy for tech transfer and campaign support
- Working closely with the cell line and downstream development groups for execution of projects
- Managing laboratory activities such as: equipment set-up, SOP generation, and routine maintenance
- Writing technical summaries and development reports for efficient knowledge management
Prerequisite
- Bio/Chemical Engineering or related field, B.S. with 4+ years industry experience or M.S. with 2+ years industry experience.
Required
- Hands-on experience conducting various industrial cell culture experiments especially single use bioreactor operation
- Familiarity with equipment used in cell culture processes and troubleshooting
- Knowledge of bioreactor characterization and engineering principles
- Basic understanding of biochemistry and cell metabolic pathway
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within a team setting
- Proficient in computer systems and relevant applications
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Preferred
- Statistical application and programming is a plus
- Excellent scientific understanding of biology and engineering principles for cell culture processes and recombinant protein production
- Experience with cell culture media and process optimization based on mechanistic understanding of cell biology and metabolism.
- Experience with perfusion bioreactor system and/or continuous bioprocessing is a plus
