The Discovery Biotherapeutics team at Bristol Myers Squibb seeks to understand the structure and function of complex large molecules in order to optimize their utility as therapeutic agents. We collaborate with biology and translational scientists imbedded in the Thematic Research Centers in order to prosecute Targets and Biological pathways with disease modifying potential. By using a blend of internal and external technologies and capabilities, we work to discover and deliver first and best-in-class molecules that warrant clinical evaluation for patient benefit. The Discovery Biotherapeutics group supports programs across all BMS therapeutic areas including Oncology, Immunology, Cardiovascular, and Fibrosis. Protein science group activities are comprised of a suite of protein expression, purification, and analytical technologies.
We are seeking a Scientist with expertise and interest in a broad range of protein expression and bioprocess optimization activities to join the protein science group in the Discovery Biotherapeutics department at our state-of-the art facility in San Diego, CA. The qualified candidate will be responsible for mammalian protein expression and bioprocess development in shake flasks, automated mini-bioreactors, and benchtop and WAVE bioreactors. The position will focus on optimizing production of therapeutic candidates to support discovery activities, with an emphasis on complex large molecule generation.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Material generation of multiple large molecule modalities including monoclonal antibodies, fusion proteins, and complex bi-/multi-specific antibodies in transient and stable formats to support early and late discovery biotherapeutic programs.
- Mammalian cell culture in shake flasks, automated mini-bioreactors, bench scale and WAVE bioreactors, and HT automated liquid handling systems.
- Process development and optimization for batch and fed-batch bioreactor and shake flask protein expressions from vial thaw to culture harvest.
- The operation and maintenance of equipment critical to functional role.
- Transient protein expression and optimization as well as stable pool and single cell clone development.
- Purification and biophysical characterization of analytical scale expression samples.
- Accurate registration of protein expression samples and records into electronic laboratory notebook and databases.
- Collaboration with cross-functional teams and presentation of results.
Requirements:
- Candidates should possess a Ph.D. in Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering or a related field. Candidates with a BS/MS with commensurate experience will be considered.
- Hands on experience with mammalian cell culture (CHO), transient and stable transfection, cell line development, culture harvest, and protein characterization.
- Experience with operating Ambr mini-bioreactors and/or bench scale bioreactors is essential. Experience with WAVE bioreactors, HT automation and analysis, bioprocess development and process optimization are highly desirable.
- Working knowledge and familiarity with protein and antibody purifications and analytical assessment.
- Proficiency with Design of experiments (DOE) and statistical analysis is a plus.
- Automation programming for benchtop bioreactors and robotic liquid handling systems is a plus.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work flexibly and contribute positively to a dynamic, collaborative, and diverse environment.
